How To - Using the iPad Camera as a Scanner

To help reduce counter-top clutter with extra hardware, we offer the option to use the iPad camera as a scanner! Scanning can be used to:

  • Scan product barcodes
  • Add loyal customers to an order
  • Load, top up, check balances, and transact with both physical and digital gift cards

Enable the iPad Camera Scanner Feature

To use the iPad Camera Scanner, you will first need to ensure your iPad is running on at least iOS version 13. This feature will not work on any older iOS versions.

Once you've ensured your iPad is running on the right version of iOS, you will need to check your Nōwn app version. Nōwn needs to be updated to at least version 1.2.2 for the scanner to work. This can be checked in the App Store.

Ways to Use the iPad Camera Scanner

  1. Scan Product Barcodes

To use the scanner to scan a UPC code for a product you sell, simply click the yellow barcode icon beside the item search bar on the transaction page. A new window will open and display what the built-in camera sees, use this to position the barcode so the iPad can successfully capture it.

  1. Add Loyal Customers to an Order

To add a customer to an order with their QR code, click the "Add Customer to Order" button as usual, but instead of having to search for the customer, click "Show QR Code Scanner" and use the pop up camera to position and scan the QR code from their phone.

  1. Gift Cards

To sell, top-up, or check the balances of gift cards, you will click the gift card tile on the transaction screen as usual, however, now there will be a yellow barcode icon. When you click this, use the camera's pop up window to position and scan the gift card.

To scan a gift card as payment, follow the usual steps by clicking "Gift Card" on the payment screen. Here you will click "Show Barcode Scanner", and again, just use the camera's pop up window to position and scan the gift card.
